Proprius presents a hand-crafted, affordable alternative based in old fashioned common sense. Our caskets
are constructed using dovetails, coupled with tongue and groove joinery, then secured with wooden-peg nails of
black locust. This method of construction was developed to offer a casket utilizing only natural materials (solidwood,
cotton strapping). There is no glue, or metal used in this casket. This approach is strongly influenced bytraditional
Jewish casket requirements (Aron).

Our coffins are designed in the classic six-sided shape. Precision work is required to successfully build this angled
coffin. Our vintage industrial equipment (1940 to 1980) aids greatly in production of precise parts and smooth milled
finishes. We are currently working on a model likened to the coffin for Pope John Paul II. We think this Pope's coffin
was outstanding as a statement of "understated dignity". This model will be called the "Pius" series, and will be
ready for release in 2006.

Our primary choices of woods are the softwoods spruce, pine, and cypress. The spruce and pine are produced
firstly from a local saw mill five miles from our facility. The wood from these trees grow between 6.000 feet
elevation to the timber line, and are generally tight grained. The region's environmental features of high altitude, moderate temperature, and low humidity, makes air drying gentle and renders very useful lumber. Both the spruce and pine rank as low with respects to resistance to decay when in contact with the ground. The spruce, pine choice
is very suited to "green" cemeteries (memorial nature preserves) and to the growing movement towards natural
and affordable burials.

Cypress on the other hand is time honored as being resistant to decay and has always been associated with
durability. Individuals who consider preservation a conviction of burial practice can consider this wood.

There is a article of interest about our local supplier of spruce pine at this web address:

Exteriors and interiors of all casket and coffins are unfinished. However we do hand-apply a commercial carnauba
wax to the exterior. This wax offers protection during handling, and lends a very silky smooth feel. When waxed,
the fresh, pure, look of natural wood remains.

The standard interiors of caskets and coffins are unlined. We do supply a bed of soft aromatic shavings of the species used. Pine shaving have the sweet smell associated with all pine, spruce clean smelling, while cypress shavings smell faintly spicy We do offer tailored padded bottom inserts in a light weight cotton canvas. Either can be covered with apersonal blanket or belonging.

We also offer some religious symbols and hand-carved letters for placement on the casket/coffin. Carved letters
are not inventoried and are made to order. Prices will be quoted upon request. Allow 2 weeks for this item.
